Unit 1(a): Recognise, Name and Write Numbers 1 to 10 and Zero.


TEACHING AIDS You will need: 1. a set of picture cards with dot patterns (0, 1 to 10) 2. a table relating pictures, number names and numerals. 3. Teachers abacus 4. pupils abacus TEACHING STEPS 1. Show a dot pattern picture card. 2. Count the number of dots, pointing to each dot as you count. 3. While saying the total number of dots, write the symbol that represents the total number of dots on the whiteboard using the correct strokes. 4. Have pupils read aloud the number name. Have pupils represent the number on the abacus. 5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 until all the cards have be shown. 6. Distribute the worksheet1(a), have pupils complete the worksheet in the remaining time. TEACHING AIDS You will need: 1. a set of picture cards with tiles (11 to 20). 2. a table relating pictures, number names and numerals. 3. Cuisenaire rods 4. Teachers abacus 5. pupils abacus TEACHING STEPS 1. Explain to pupils that it is easier to count when objects are arranged in groups of ten.

2. Show pupils one of the cards. 3. Count the number of tiles by pointing to the ten tile set and counting on from ten. 4. Say the number name and write the numerals that represent the number on the whiteboard using the correct strokes. 5. Have pupils read aloud the number name and move the corresponding number of beads on the abacus to represent the number. 6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 until all the cards have been shown. 7. TEACHING AIDS You wil need: 6. a set of picture cards with tiles (20 to 100) 7. a table relating pictures, number names and numerals. 8. Cuisenaire rods and multi-based blocks 9. Teachers abacus 10.pupils abacus TEACHING STEPS 1. Using Cuisenaire rods or multi based blocks show pupils that ten cubes make up a 10 rod .

2. Each 10 rod represents 10. Two 10 rods represents 20, three 10 rods represents 30 and so on. 3. Have pupils count in tens followed by ones to find the total, example:

4. Write down the numerals that represent the number. 5. Show flash cards of multi based blocks to represent numbers, have pupils say the number aloud and write the number. Have pupils move the correct number of beads on the abacus to represent the number. 6. Repeat steps 1 to 5 until for other flash cards. 7. Distribute worksheet 1(c) for pupils to complete in the time remaining.
