Creating Map Symbology
Reference map (General map) and thematic map are separated two types of map. The arrangement of symbols and text is impotent because it can make the reader easy to understand. I. Working with map symbols

We should try to use symbols which people make. For example, green for plant and a line for a road. It is a helpful method for you to make your map more effective. II. Type of symbols

Each feature has deferent symbols. One way to reuse layers symbols is to create a layer file. It is easy for you to reuse it, and your co-works can use the same symbols which you have made. III. Choosing symbols There are a lot of symbols which you can use for your normal map, and they are searchable. In ArcMap you can create or import new symbols if you wouldnt prefer to use default symbols. IV. Labeling map features One thing which is important to map text is to label features. Names are normal labels which people usually use. You can add your own text to the map, and it called annotation. You can store annotation either in a map document or a database. V. Symbolizing features based on attributes

You can symbolize features based on an attributes in GIS map. The map which symbolized features based on an attribute called thematic map.

VI. Classify data There are three points you must decide when you want to symbolize features base on qualities in ArcMap. 1. The number of classes would you like to have. 2. Method use to place the values into classes. 3. Kind of symbology to use. (Graduated color or graduated symbols) - Grouping attribute values You can choose one of several methods to classify your features such as natural break, equal interval, Quantile, or manual. - Decide which classification scheme to use The best classification depends on map purpose. VII. Mapping density and proportion Mapping with graduated color or symbols sometimes can be confused when polygon features change greatly in area. Mapping density using attribute values and mapping density visually are two way that density can be symbolize on a map.
