Properties of Element in Periodic Table
Properties of Element in Periodic Table
Comparison of the physical properties of metals and non metals (table 3.2 page 66)
A metal is an element that conduct electricity and is malleable and ductile A non metal is an element that does not conduct electricity well and neither malleable nor ductile
The change from metallic to non metallic properties in the elements is called as METALLOIDS Elements with properties that are intermediate between those of metals and nonmetals.
Silicon and germanium are two important metalloids that are used in the manufacture of computer chips and solar cells.
Transition Elements
The transition elements have the following general features : 1. They are hard 2. They have high tensile strength 3. They have high density 4. They have high melting and boiling point 5. They are good conductors of heat and electricity 6. They are malleable and ductile The distinctive properties of the transition elements : 1. Many of their compounds are coloured 2. The metals or their compounds often make useful catalysts 3. A few of the metals are strongly magnetic (iron, cobalt, nickel)
Noble Gases
The distinctive properties of noble gases 1. Referred to inert gases 2. The elements at the top of the group do not form any compounds 3. They have extremely low melting point and boiling point 4. They give lighting effect
