Speech Analysis

Directions: Highlight or underline the parts of the speech that stand out to you or have the most impact on you. Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What speech are you analyzing? Who is the speaker/author?

2. What is the purpose of the speech? Is it trying to persuade, inform, entertain, or create an emotional response? How do you know? Give an example from the speech to support your answer.

3. Who do you think is the intended audience? If there are any clues in the speech, give an example.

4. What is the attitude being expressed in the speech? Is it serious, thoughtful, passionate, wellinformed, funny, or something else? Give an example and explain.

5. Identify any fallacies used within the speech. What are they and how are they used?

6. Action words, or verbs, are often used in persuasive speeches. List the actions words you found to be the most powerful or persuasive.

7. Explain, in your own words, what the speech was about.

8. Does a speech have more power when it is read or when it is heard? Explain.
