Lesson Plan

Name: Political Systems Debate Class/Subject: High School Government Date: 4/23/2013 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will critically analyze and debate upon which political system (Capitalism, Socialism, and Communism) is their favorite while observing both strengths and weaknesses off all three of these political systems.

Content Standards:
14.B.4 Compare the political systems of the United States to other nations.

Materials/Resources/Technology: Pros and Cons worksheet, Textbook Teachers Goals: Students will better understand that different countries have many different political systems and that these fundamental differences can be the source of international tension. Time

Start of Class: Review last nights readings on the three different political systems Introduction of Lesson: Assign students randomly to 3 groups (Capitalist, Socialists, Communists) Instruct them to fill out positives of their system and Cons of the others Lesson Instruction: Moderate a debate between the three groups about whose system is the best. Have them write down Pros for other systems during this activity. Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Have students turn in Pros and Cons form at the end of class for completion grade. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Teacher will remark on how heated the debate was and then ask students if they think that these fundamental differences can cause international conflict Self-Assessment: Did students show critical thinking in both the debate, worksheet, and during closure/wrap-up? Seen in lengthiness of response and rebuttal to classmates arguments.
