    Penguins have dark backs and light chests which provides camouflage. When viewed from above in the water, their dark backs blend in with the dark sea below. When viewed from below in the water, their light chests blend in with the filtered sunlight from above. This countershading camouflage makes penguins difficult to spot both above and below the water.

    CAMOUFLAGE

    All penguins are dark on their backs and white on their chests. How does this countershading provide camouflage? Looking down into the dark sea, you might not notice a dark-colored penguin. And if you were below the penguin looking up, the light color of its chest could blend in with the filtered sunlight shining through the water.

    why is it that penguins are not eaeily spotted under water?
