Sponge Activity
 Find a seat.
 Get a sheet of paper and a pencil or pen.
 Think back to when you were in the same
grade your child currently is. (Choose one
child if you have more than one). What is
one thing you especially remember learning
that year in school? Briefly describe your
learning experience.
 After 5-7 minutes, turn to the person sitting
next to you, and share your memory. Make
sure you each have an opportunity to share
in 2 minutes (1 minute each).

alignment.

Dennis Littky is co-founder of the Metropolitan
Regional Career and Technical Center in
Rhode Island and cofounder of The Big Picture
Company, a nonprofit education reform
organization that creates and supports small,
personalized, public high schools that work in
tandem with communities.
Reading Activity
 Read/Skim Chapter 1: The Real Goals of
Education.
 Divide into smaller groups.
 Discuss the Littky ideas that particularly
resonate with you.
 Record 3-4 ideas on chart paper that your
group thinks will be important for the CMS
staff to consider when making changes to
the current content and/or delivery systems.
 Share your charts.

Take a few minutes (on your own) to


jot down your top, most important 2-3
goals for your child’s education at
CMS.
