Biology Play Questions

Day 1: 1. Phospholipids are always moving around each other to allow other molecules to pass through 2. Water molecules always move to the side with the fewest water molecules because the concentration gradient is unequal so they need to diffuse and move to reach a state of equilibrium. 3. When water molecules diffuse through a selectively permeable membrane it is called osmosis 4. Water and carbon dioxide are fairly small molecules so they can squeeze through the bilayer. Glucose is a big molecule and could not fit through. Day 2: 1. Glucose can not pass through calcium ion channels because they are selectively permeable to calcium 2. Calcium moves against its concentration gradient Day 3: 1. A glucose carrier protein moves glucose down its concentration gradient 2. Only glucose molecules could pass through because it is selectively permeable. 3. Energy was necessary for the molecule to be transported. Day 4: 1. Acts one would fall under passive transport because it does not require energy to transport the water molecules across the membrane. 2. Osmosis and diffusion are the names of the passive transports demonstrated in class 3. The acts 2 and 3 would fall under active transport because glucose needs energy to be transported against its concentration gradient
