Title
Preparation of Benzoic Acid

Objective
To prepare benzoic acid from benzamide

Observation
Before reaction: During reaction: After reaction:

Data
Mass of conical flask and benzamide = 39.50 g Mass of conical flask = 36.50 g Mass of benzamide used = 3.00 g Mass of watch glass and benzoic acid = 19.00 g Mass of watch glass = 16.50 g Mass of benzoic acid used = 2.50 g

Calculation
1. Calculate the theoretical mass of benzoic acid produced no. of moles of benzamide used = 3.00 / (12.0x7 + 1.0x7 + 16.0 + 14.0) = 0.0248 (3sf) the mole ratio of benzamide and benzoate ion = 1:1 no. of moles of benzoate ion produced = 0.0248 (3sf) the mole ratio of benzoate ion and benzoic acid = 1:1 no. of moles of benzoic acid produced = 0.0248 (3sf) the theoretical mass of benzoic acid produced = 0.0248 x (12.0x7 + 1.0x6 + 16.0x2) = 3.02g (3sf) 2. Calculate the percentage yield of the benzoic acid Percentage yield of benzoic acid = (actual yield of benzoic acid / theoretical yield of benzoic acid) x 100% = (2.50/3.02) x 100% = 82.7% (3sf)

Diagram
Experimental set-up:

Result
The theoretical mass of benzoic acid produced is 3.02g (3sf) and the percentage yield of the benzoic acid is 82.7% (3sf).

Conclusion
Benzoic acid was prepared from benzamide.
