UNDERSTANDING WELDING SYMBOLS , TERMS & DEFINITIONS

TYPES OF WELDED JOINTS Lap or fillet joint:


This type of joint is obtained by overlapping the plates & welding their edges. The fillet joints may be single transverse fillet, double transverse fillet or parallel fillet joints.

Single transverse lap joint

Parallel lap joint

Butt joints:
This type of joint is formed by placing the plates edge to edge and welding them. Grooves are sometimes cut for thick plates on the edges before welding

Difference b/w Arrow side & other side weld


In arrow side, fillet weld symbol is below the reference line.

In other side, fillet weld symbol is above reference line.

Application of Welding Symbols

Symbol indicates 3/8 inch fillet weld on arrow side and 1/4 inch fillet weld on other side.

Symbol indicates bevel groove with an angle of 45 degrees, 3/8 inch fillet weld on arrow side and bead type back weld on other side

Symbol indicates 1/4 inch fillet weld on arrow side and bevel groove weld on other side, Grind flush on other side.

Symbol indicate 1/4 inch fillet weld all around

Symbol indicates intermittent fillet weld each 2 inch long and spaced on 5 inch centres
