Scream Opening Title Analysis and Comparison

By Emma Whelan

Typography
Scream uses a bold dramatic typography to emphasise the dramatic nature of the narrative and to emphasise the titling of Scream making the horror clear.

Edward uses Wagner typography which was inspired by the typography used in scream, the use of the one word title was also inspired from scream to emphasise Edwards importance in the narrative and to present him as the human monster.

The Human Monster

Scream could be interpreted to have aspects of crime within it as its narrative focuses on the slaughtering of individuals. To create the human monster Edward we focused on introducing several girls to emphasise the thriller form whilst setting up the narrative to include the human monster shown through the pale white hands shown in the strangulation scenes.

Setting
The setting chosen for Edward was individual and unique to most films who focus on the subgenre of human monster. Rather than using domestic setting such as the kitchen or living rooms in scream, we focused on a isolated setting to emphasise the theme of desolation.

Sound
The opening title sequences of many of the Scream films include a lack of diegetic sound. The inclusion of blackouts during the opening credits and amplified noises of phones ringing creates a deliberate sense of horror. Rather than recreate this we decided to create a subtle opening title which eluded to the sense of horror and murder without shocking the audience during the opening minute of the film.
