Risk Management Cycle

Risk Management

Goal = safe environment for patients It is important for physiotherapists to evaluate and manage risk in their own practice. This includes the physical environment, treatment provided and interpersonal relationships. Managing risk involves making decisions using a proactive, systematic and formalized process that is informed by data - to identify and respond to circumstances that put patients at risk of harm. Adopting a data informed and formalized risk management approach can improve decision making in times of uncertainty, thereby reducing risk. The steps to be followed as part of the risk management cycle are similar to those used in clinical and ethical decision making and should be familiar to all physiotherapists. These steps include: 1. Identify dene the problem, scope and context examine the people, expertise, tools and techniques consult with stakeholders Analyze assess the likelihood and impact of risk(s) based on evidence, context and tolerance1 determine and rank options considering long term and short term goals Respond develop a strategy implement the plan communicate appropriately Evaluate monitor, follow up and adjust as needed share learning with others

Communication plays huge role at every step of the risk management cycle to reduce, prevent and minimize risk. Communication risks are high in a number of situations; e.g. during care transitions; with vulnerable patients (language, cognition, frailty, lack of support); and when information is critical, high level or rushed.

Tolerance refers to the willingness to accept risk in order to achieve a potential outcome and is based on the ability to withstand or absorb any potential consequences. The greater an individuals tolerance, the more risk he or she is willing to take.
