Floods

A flood is an overflow of water that submerges from land.1 Floods normally occur when there is heavy rainfall, which rises the water level for rivers and lakes, eventually spilling onto the surrounding land.2 There are also other causes to floods, some natural and some man-made. Floods stand on the list of deadliest disasters, ranked 1 and 2, both in China.3 Floods can also happen underground when pipes are damaged.4

Causes

Effects and Damage5


The amount of damage varies on how severe the flood is. The amount of damage is split into 3 levels, primary, secondary, and tertiary.

Primary damage
Physical damage Bridges, buildings damaged Facilities damaged

Secondary damage
Drinking water polluted Disease transmitting in water Lack of food Transport failure

Prevention
Many floods could be prevented if done on time. Defenses like levees and sea walls could be built before floods and preventing the water. Immediate defenses could be made by putting sandbags and inflatable tubes near coastal lines to prevent the water and suck away the water. People living in low-lands area could prepare a grab-and-go kit in case of a flood. This kit includes warm clothes, food and water, blankets, IDs, medicine, a portable radio, phone charger, and a flashlight in case of emergency.
