Max Meyer English E2-01 Act 3 Scene 5 Summary

Romeo and Juliet wake after their first and only night together. They don't want to say good-bye, but they know Romeo will be killed if he gets caught in Verona AND in Juliets bed. They are both unsure of weather they will see each other or not in the future. Before Juliet has time to get herself together after saying goodbye to her husband, her mother comes in. They have a conversation about Romeo, in which her mother heavily misinterprets everything she says.

Lady Capulet then tells Juliet that she is set to wed Paris in two days. Juliet responds fiercely that she will not marry Paris under any conditions. Her mother is infuriated and leaves this mess to be handled by her father

Lord Capulet walks, beaming that he set up his daughter for a marriage without consulting her first. In his mind, Juliet should be grateful.

Instead she tells him that he cannot make her marry Paris. Lord Capulet then tells Juliet that if she does not marry Paris, she will be disowned. After Lord Capulet storms out, Juliet turns to her mother for help. Juliet begs her mother to find a way even to delay the marriage with Paris.

Lady Capulet tells her to do what she has done, and walks out. Juliet makes a case for not abandoning her husband She is already married, and breaking that bond would be considered a sin against god.

The Nurse tells her, marrying Paris would be a step up on the

social ladder. He is a good looking and likable person that will take care of Juliet. She also does not have a choice.

Juliet feels that no one is on her side anymore, that only one person, Friar Lawrence, will be able to help her. If this does not work, her other option is killing herself.
