Edge Coupled Band Pass Filters

Overview

We are given graph of Frequency response desired , that gives us information about filter specifications required like attenuation required in stop band etc.. We approximate the specifications required with some set of orthogonal functions like Chebyshev, Butterworth etc.. Network is realized using network synthesis techniques

Example for Desired Frequency response

Maximally Flat

Zero order proximity First order proximity

Butterworth approximation have first N-1 derivatives set to zero, so called maximally flat

Chebyshev Polynomials

Equiripple filter
chebyshev approximation ripples about unity in the pass band and =1 falls of rapidly beyond the cutoff It is equally good at =0 and =1 , so called Equiripple

maximally flat approximation to ideal low pass filter is best at =0 ,where as, we approach =1, the approximation becomes progressively poorer

Butterworth & Chebyshev approximation as order n increases

Generally less value of makes first term negative , which reduces loss in stop band. N is to be chosen sufficiently high to compensate for the same.

=2 =2

=1

Required Design:

Solution:

Design of edge coupled band pass filter for 4GHz with bandwidth of 15%, maximum ripple in pass band is 0.05dB. Substrate used is Rogers RT Duroid.

Since , ripple in pass band is tolerated ,chebyshev approximation gives us better approximation than Butterworth for a given order
