All these investigations are to monitor the causes of coma. The majority of medical causes of coma can be established without a neuroimaging study. History & examination.

Laboratory studies
Chemical analysis: Arterial blood gases(lung disease,& acid-base disorders). Metabolic analysis: Electrolytes, as Ca,Na. Glucose. Ketone bodies. Hyperosmolarity.
Blood urea nitrogen. Ammonium(NH3) for hepatic function. Toxicologic analysis: Drugs:(opiates, Sedative drugs, & etc). Toxins. Alcohol. CSF analysis: Meningitis. Encephalitis.

Useful in detecting causes that are radiologically detectable as: Hemorrhages. Tumors & mass lesions causing intracranial pressure(ICP). Traumatic skull injury. Hydrocephalus. Infarctions. Atrophy. Thrombosis. By using one of two tools : CT(Computed Tomography). MRI(Magnetic Resonant Imaging).
