An example of a completion reaction: Burning of a candle C25 H52 (s) + O2 (g) --> CO2 (g) + H2O Burning of sulfur

S8 (s) + O2 (g) -> 8SO2 (g)

see page 498

In static equilibrium nothing is changing. Examples: oil and water, burned candle wick and air. In dynamic equilibrium there is no net change but the products are constantly combining and reforming the reactants. ex: H2 + I2 2HI The rate of change is equal at equilibrium.

In some reactions the reaction is nearly finished before the product starts to break down and form reactants again. This is shown by the size of the yield arrows Reactants Products

Arrow length shows favorability of product or reactant

April 23, 2013 Objective: To learn about chemical equilibrium Preclass: Copy this reaction. This is the reaction for the chemistry of cave formation CaCO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(l) Ca2+(aq) + 2HCO3-(aq)

CaCO3(s) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

Ca2+(aq) + 2HCO3-(aq)

How might humans entering into caves damage them? How might we effect this reaction?

Objective: To be able to calculate the equilibrium constant: Keq To observe how a 1 molar solution is made. To watch a reaction. Pre class: Page 501 # 1-4 1. reaction that goes to completion. C Reactants-----> products 2. at equilibrium the relationship between the rate of the forward and the backward reaction is that they are equal. 3. A. equal products and reactants. B. MOre products that reactants 4. In dynamic equilibrium the products and reactants are changing back and forth. (example salt crystals in the bottom of a very concentrated solution of salt water) In a static equilibrium nothing is changing at all.
