Commanders Report
April sure went by fast. The Trail of Honor was canceled but Champion Hill is still on May 15th. Please plan to attend and volunteer while you are there. Our relic show is June 22nd and 23rd. We are expecting over 2,000 visitors and yes, we need all hands on deck! Our speaker this month is Allen Terrell from Natchez, MS. You will love his energy. There will be a lot of information given out over the next two meetings. Your attendance is requested. And as sure as its starting to heat up outside, I will probably see you at our next meeting on May 4th at Penns in Brandon. May God bless you and yours, our military around the world, and may God continue to bless that United States of America. Tim Cupit

Chaplains Report By: Tom Fortenberry

Maj. Gen. Patrick Ronayne Cleburne "Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late... It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision... It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties." --- Maj. General Patrick R. Cleburne, CSA, January 1864, writing on what would happen if the Confederacy were to be defeated. "If this cause, that is dear to my heart, is doomed to fail, I pray heaven may let me fall with it, while my face is toward the enemy and my arm battling for that which I know is right." --- Major General Patrick R. Cleburne before his fatal wound at the battle of Franklin, Tennessee. Today we remain to face an enemy who continues with a burning desire to trample underfoot the Constitution of this great nation and to strike Gods written word from the hearts of men. Even as one man, Maj. Gen. Patrick Cleburne fell. He fell with fellow men who faced the enemy as we also face today. And yet the desire for freedom cannot be subjugated by men when by faith we believe and know that our God is right. For where God is there is no fear, for the enemy will flee. Josh 1:9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Did you know?

The May 16, 1863 Battle of Champion Hill was the largest, bloodiest, and most significant action of Grants Vicksburg Campaign. 32,000 advancing Union soldiers met 23,000 Confederates in a fierce struggle for a vital crossroads roughly halfway between Vicksburg and Jackson, Mississippi. The field was dominated by bald Champion Hill, from which Confederate artillery opened fire on the Union army at 9:45 A.M. The first Federal assault on the hill drove the Southerners back with bayonets and clubbed muskets. As the Union soldiers tried to reform and consolidate their gains, they were swept away by a counterattack led by John Bowens Missourians and Arkansans. Ulysses S. Grant ordered more men towards the hill and Bowens Confederates were themselves driven off, compelling a general retreat. Southern Brig. Gen. Lloyd Tilghman was killed while directing a desperate rearguard action that enabled most of the Confederate army to escape towards Vicksburg. The decisive Union victory at Champion Hill was instrumental in forcing the Confederates out of the open field and into a doomed position inside the walls of Vicksburg.
