Y-

CAN YOU
SWIM IT?
Did you know that the earth is 70 percent water? With
all that water its important to know how to swim.
The Y oers a variety of swim programs that remind
children and adults about the value in practicing water
safety. The Y places an emphasis on teaching
condence boosting swim techniques that help
individuals enjoy, not fear, water related activities.
The Y is committed to providing as many
opportunities as possible for everyone to learn basic
swimming lessons and water safety practices, said
Kristen Hogan, Marketing Director for the YMCA of the
Capital Area. We encourage kids and adults to have
fun when in and around the water, but to always make
safety their rst priority.
In honor of National Water Safety Month this May, the
Y recommends kids and adults to practice the
following safety tips when in and around the water:

t Only swim when and where there is a lifeguard on
duty; never swim alone.
t Adults should constantly and actively watch
children in and near the water. If multiple adults
are in the vicinity, designate a water watcher so
everyone knows who is on duty.
t Inexperienced swimmers should wear a Coast
Guard-approved life jacket when in, on or around
the water.
t Parents or guardians of children who are
non-swimmers or beginning swimmers should be
in the water and within arms reach of their child.
t Children and adults should not engage in breath
holding activities in the water.

STARBUCKS EMPLOYEES
BEAUTIFY THE BARANCO
CLARK YMCA
On Tuesday, March 19th, 20
employees from various
Starbucks stores across the

helped lay down mulch for
the playground and clear the
long standing debris that had
been thrown across the fence
on the side of the
gymnasium. Their goal was
to help beautify and maintain
the branch. Through their eorts they helped to completely ll
a 15 yard dumpster with debris, trash and dirt.

HAVE A DRINK...
OF WATER ON US
Water is an essential component of the human body. Water
regulates the bodys temperature, protects and maintains vital
organs and assists within the digestive system. Water composes
75 percent of all muscle tissue and about 10 percent of fatty
tissue. It also acts within each cell to transport nutrients and
dispel waste, making it impossible to sustain life for more than a
week without water.
To maintain healthy function of vital organs, water must be
consumed daily to replenish the loss of water during basic and
physical activities. In one hour of exercise, the body can lose
more than a quart of water depending on the intensity of the
exercise and the surrounding air temperature. During exercise,
water is one of the best uid replenishers, although sports
drinks help replace lost electrolytes during exercise
exceeding 45 minutes. Sports drinks also
aid individuals who sweat profusely
during workouts.
Hydration Hints:
t Remember to drink water before
signs of thirst appear. Thirst is a signal
indicating that the body is already
on its way toward dehydration.
t Drink 17-20 ounces of water two
to three hours before you start to
exercise.
t Drink 8 ounces of uid 20 to 30
minutes prior to exercise or during a
warm up.
t Drink 7 to 10 ounces of uid every 10
to 20 minutes during exercise.
t Drink an additional 8 ounces of uid
within 30 minutes after exercising.
