Title: Learning Black Is the Color of My True Loves Hair arranged by Melissa Roth and David Moran Grades: 10-12 (Womens ensemble) Materials: Piano, copies of Black Is the Color for each student Length of Rehearsal: 10 minutes Objective: The students will be able to sing the entire piece on text with accurate notes and rhythms, good diction, and expressive phrasing. Focusing Question: In what ways will students be able to apply what they have learned thus far in this piece (notes, rhythms, musical ideas) to learn mm. 37-50? Sequence: 1. I will review mm. 9-27 to get the piece in their ears. I will play their parts on the piano. 2. Only those with the melody will sing mm. 37-41. -This will demonstrate how the melody moves from the soprano 2s to the soprano 1s. -I will remind the class to sing expressively with dynamic contrasts. Long notes in the middle of phrases should crescendo. -Everyone will copy the dynamics in the beginning of the piece to this section, but they should be performed less dramatically. 3. Only those without the melody will sing mm. 37-45. -Soprano 1s and altos will sing mm. 37-39. -Soprano 2s and altos will sing mm. 40-45. 4. I will review parts separately as needed in mm. 37-45. 5. Everyone will sing mm. 37-45. -I will model phrasing for this section by making an arc to demonstrate the phrasing while I sing. -I will ask my students to make an arc for each phrase with their arms. The highest point of the phrase should match the highest point of the arc. 6. After reviewing any problem areas in mm. 37-45, everyone will sing the section again and continue to the end of the piece. Assessment: I will listen for accuracy of rhythms and pitches as the new section is learned. Additionally, I will evaluate how the students demonstrate phrasing visually and vocally.
