We would like to gratefully and sincerely thanks our lecturer Mr Mevin Lutchoo, gave us the opportunity to work as a team for the case study, he also provided his guidance and unbelievable insight.
This assignment helped us to improve our knowledge about the different concept and aspects of Management Information System as a part in a business. As a part of the assignment we were also able to know more about United Parcel Service, its website and the product and services it provide. Another great experience we got through this assignment was about team work. Working as a team was great and everyone in the group participated fully.
This assignment would not have been possible without our lecturers guidance and the team support

Today UPS delivers more than 13 million parcels and documents daily throughout the United States and more than 200 other countries and territories. The firm has been able to maintain its leadership in small-package delivery services in the face of stiff competition from Federal Express and Airborne Express by investing heavily in advanced information technology. Over the past decade, UPS has spent more than $1 billion a year to boost customer service while keeping costs low and streamlining its overall operations.
Through its automated package tracking system, UPS can monitor packages throughout the delivery process. At various points along the route from sender to receiver, a bar code device scans shipping information on the package label; the information is then fed into the central computer.
4|P ag e
Inputs: The inputs include package information, customer signature, pickup, delivery, time-card data, current location (while en route), and billing and customer clearance documentation.
First and foremost, computer handheld device called Delivery Information Acquisition Device (DIAD) identify to be an input device use by United Parcel Service (UPS) for their package tracking system. This input device automatically captures customers signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-card information. The driver then places the DIAD into the UPS trucks adapter, information is then transmitted to UPS computer network for storage and processing by UPS main computers in Mahwah, New Jersey, and Alpharetta, Georgia.
From there, the information can be accessed worldwide to provide proof of delivery to customers or to respond to customers queries. Secondly, Bar Code Devices is also identified to be an input partly because it helps UPS scans shipping information on the package label and then fed into the central computer. Customer service representatives can check the status of any package from desktop linked to the central computer and are able to respond immediately to inquiries from customers.UPS customers can also access this information from the companys website usin g their own computers or wireless devices such as pagers and cell phones.
Processing: The data are transmitted to a central computer and stored for retrieval. Data are also reorganized so that they can be tracked by customer account, date, driver, and other criteria such as the consolidation of orders for efficient final delivery of packages. With the new subsidiaries, UPS now gas also the potential to lease call centre capacity to a customer, handle logistics and related information exchange for all transactions. Outputs: The outputs include pickup and delivery times, location while en route, and package recipient. The outputs also include various reports, such as all packages for a specific account or a specific driver or route, as well as summary reports for management.

The technologies uses in UPS are: 1. UPS net It is a global electronic data communication network that provides an information processing pipeline for international package processing and delivery.
2. DIAD Using a handheld computer device called a DIAD [Delivery Information Acquisition Device], the driver electronically captures information about each package, including the time of delivery and even the signature of the person receiving the package. This information is transmitted via cellular telephone from the package car to UPS computers, where it is available for customers to trace their packages or verify proof of delivery. 3. UPS Online- Tools UPS allows customers to download, free of charge, electronic tools [APIs, that is, Application Program Interface] which are:
UPS Tracking: Both the shipper and recipient of a package can track the status of the package directly from the UPS website. Information available from the tracking system includes location
6|P ag e
UPS Rates and Service Selection: A tool that allows a customer to estimate the cost of sending a package the customer enters the size and weight of the package, pickup and drop- off locations and requested service type then a quotation is provided for the cost of sending the package.
In addition to that the technologies used in UPS consist of handheld computers (DIADs), barcode scanners, wired and wireless communications networks, desktop computers, UPSs central computer, storage technology for the package delivery data, UPS in-house package tracking software, and many different pieces of software to access the Internet and many different pieces of software for tracking packages, calculating fees, maintaining customer accounts, and managing logistics.
The Web serves as the foundation for new kinds of information systems such as their Web-based package tracking system. Through the use of DIADs, the UPS drivers automatically capture customers signatures along with pickup, delivery, and time-card information. UPSs information systems use these data to track packages while they are being transported. The result is an information system solution to the business challenge of providing a high level of service with low prices in the face of mounting competition.
How are these technologies related to UPSs Business Strategy? These technologies in long run will bring the company higher revenue. The companys strategy is to have the best service but in the lowest price. So by using those technologies in their company, they are confident that they are having the best service because the technology they use assures them. UPS has used the same strategy over 90 years. Its strategy is to provide the

A webpage is a document, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML, XHTML). A webpage may incorporate elements from other websites with suitable markup anchors.
Web pages are accessed and transported with the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which may optionally employ encryption (HTTP Secure, HTTPS) to provide security and privacy for the user of the webpage content. The user's application, often a web browser, renders the page content according to its HTML markup instructions onto a display terminal.
The pages of a website can usually be accessed from a simple Uniform Resource Locator (URL) called the web address. The URLs of the pages organize them into a hierarchy, although hyper linking between them conveys the reader's perceived site structure and guides the reader's navigation of the site which generally includes a home page with most of the links to the site's web content, and a supplementary about, contact and link page.
Some websites require a subscription to access some or all of their content. Examples of subscription websites include many business sites, parts of news websites, academic journal websites, gaming websites, file-sharing websites, message boards, web-based email, social networking websites, websites providing real-time stock market data, and websites providing various other services (e.g., websites offering storing and/or sharing of images, files and so forth)
