This article explains the amount of alcohol be consumed by the youth and the consequences of underage drinking. This website gives you percentages on how many binge drink, drove after drinking, and who have gotten in a car with someone who has. This journal article begins with background information on the amount of yearly deaths that are due to the consumption of alcohol. It goes on to talk about a survey that was given to a vast array of Americans that examines how much they drink and if they are binge drinkers. They found that a majority of students in high school that drink (60.9%) are binge drinkers (four or more alcoholic beverages in one sitting for women and five or more alcoholic beverages for men in one sitting). This study looks at how many senior athletes that take part in competitive sports consume alcohol (and marijuana) and compares the finding of various competitive sports. The study focuses in on alcohol consumption based on race and genders, finding that white males on average, consume more alcohol than other races and race did not play a factor, for all female sports recorded instances of alcohol consumption. Alcohol use during the transition from middle school to high school: national panel data on prevalence and moderators. Developmental Psychology, doi: 10.1037/a0031843 In this journal article it talks about the transition with alcohol from middle school to high school. The amount of alcohol consumed by the adolescents increased due to stress and social acceptance. A Nation Longitudinal Survey of Youth was taking in 1997 showing data on the impact of the transition. This journal article talks about the relationship between music and alcohol brand appearance in the US. Adolescents are exposed to at least 34 types of alcohol in popular music daily. In this article they go on to say that alcohol brands are associated with luxury, wealth, sex and other risky behaviors that attract the young mind. It goes into what these programs should be focusing on to succeed such as building personal and social skills that can help students resist peer pressures to drink. The SADD organization provides peer to peer education and links about alcohol consumption among youth. Psychology Of Addictive Behaviors, 25(2), 340-345. doi:10.1037/a0022252 This article is a study that looks at gender, age, and motivations for drinking in high school students that pregame. It has found that students often pregame prior to parties where alcohol is available and sporting events. It also uses the information it has collected and looks at ways to prevent this risky drinking practice.
