I. Standards: (ALCOS) Science (2005) Grade: 2 Identify the relationship of structure to function in plants, including roots, stems, leaves and flowers. II. Objectives: Students will be able to identify a plants structure and how the plants structure functions. III. Introductory Activity (Engage): The class will have a discussion on what the plants need to grow and the parts of the plant and how the plant functions/lives. The teacher will have the students work with their partner on dissecting a lima bean. Students will dissect the lima beans with toothpicks and discuss what parts are in the seed with their partner. The teacher will then discuss with the class what parts were in the lima bean (outside layer-seed coat, inside layer-embryo and food supply). The teacher will pull up the Seedling time-lapse video up from www.neok12. Students will watch the video and then discuss how the plant grew and the different parts of the plant. IV. Developmental Activities (Explore & Explain): The teacher will inform the students that they will be planting seeds and will be observing the plants life cycle over the next few weeks. The teacher will place materials in the middle of the group tables. The teacher will put the directions on how to plant their seeds on the smart board as well as explain the directions to the students. The students will plant their seeds individually. V. Culminating Activity (Elaborate): The teacher will hand out observation journals for the students to keep track of the growth of the students plant. Students will fill out day one information and turn the observation journals into the teacher. The teacher will hand out Parts of a plant

activity sheet. The students will complete and hand in the activity sheet when completed. VI. Assessing Student Learning: The teacher will collect and assess the observation journals and the activity sheet to assess the students. The teacher will do a visual assessment during the planting of the seeds. VII. Modifications for Special Needs: Students who have vision impairments will be seated closer to the front. Students who have trouble focusing will be seated next to the teacher. Slower students will be give extra time if needed.
