Book:

Skeleton Man by Joseph Bruchac

Skeleton Man ELA/ Visualizing 4/29-5/6

Context: Students will create a story wheel to help visualize story elements and practice summarizing. I will tell students: Good readers make pictures in their heads to go with the words in a book and this helps them understand the story. Good readers make pictures of the people and places described in books. Today while you are listening to the story try closing your eyes and see if you can create a picture in your mind. What do you see in your mind? What do you hear, feel, taste, smell, and picture? 1. I will introduce students to the story wheels. A story wheel is a circle divided into 6- 8 segments (pie pieces) with a smaller circle in the center of the larger circle. I will show these to the students and explain what they will be doing with them. 2. Students listen to the story and read to class if they volunteer to do this. 3. After we are finished reading we will talk about important events in the story. 4. The students will make their own list of important events in the story. I will remind the students: Remember to choose events from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. 5. Each day, students will illustrate their events on the corresponding pie segments. 6. Students will write the book title and the authors name in the center circle.
