Thestations: Wordworkthestudentssortedpicturesinavegetabletray.Thepictureswere thingsthathadaoreinthem.Igavethemamixtureof4longand4shortofboth aandewords.

BuddyreadingThestudentsweregivenbigbooksandhighlightertape.They weretoldtotryandfindallthewordsthathavethevoweluinthem.

WorkonwritingThestudentsweregivenpicturesthathadeitheralongorshort iorointhem.Theyhadtocutoutthepictureandwriteasentencewithit.They

weretoldtostretchoutthepictureintheirwriting.

PoetryThestudentsweregivenapoemabouteachvowel.Theyhadtoread throughthematleasttwiceandoncetheyweredonetheycouldworkonavowel coloringsheet.

ComputersthestudentsweregiventheIpadsandtoldtogototheappTiny Tap.ThereIcreatedagameforthemtoreviewbothlongandshortvowels.

ListentoreadingAnybookwouldwork.Thestudenthadtolistentothestory andfillinalistentoreadingsheetafterthestorywasover.Theywrotedown someofthewordstheyrecognizedinthestorywithlongandshortvowelsin them.

ReadtheroomThistimethestudentsworkedwithmetomakeavowelsort book.Theyhadtocolorandstretchoutthepicturesoneachpage.Oncethey werefinishedIhelpedthemrecordtheirstoryonaappcalledLittleBirdTales.

ThestudentsandIarenowworkingonbeginningblends.Everymorningwegoover thevowelsandtheconsonantsonouralphabetchart.AsadailyreviewIliketoask thestudentswhatthevowelsareinthewordweseeandthesoundstheymake. 2. IfIweretoextendthisfurther,IwoulddoanotherroundofDailyFive,butwith differentactivities.Sincethestudentsarebecomingverygoodatidentifyingvowels Iwouldmaketheactivitiesmorechallengingthenexttimearound.

Summative Assessment

Iwillbegivingthestudentsapicturesortcomparingshortvowelsand thenanothersortcomparinglongvowels.Iwillusethesetohelpme assessiftheyhaveunderstoodtheconceptoflongandshortvowels andthedifferentsoundstheymake. ThisrubricwasusedfortheVowelBookRubric:

Reflection:
Ifeelthestudentsdidverywellwithlongandshortvowels.Theyareabletotellthatalong vowelsaysitsnameandthatashortvoweldoesnot.Ihavenoticedthatthestudentwill oftenpointoutthevowelsinawordtheyarestretchingoutandwhenaskedtheycantell meifthevowelislongorshort.Iamsohappywithhowtheirbooksturnedout.Theyworked hardmakingtheirbooksandrecordingthemwasalotoffun.

FutureChanges:
IthinknextyearIwouldliketohavethestudentsdrawthepicturesinthebooks.Mybook

thisyearwasalittlemorestructuredanddidntallowforthestudentstothinkoftheirown ideas.Theyjustwererequiredtostretchoutthepictures.Afewofmyhighstudentscould havedefinitelyhandledcomingupwiththeirownideasanddrawingtheirownpictures.
