A.Whatdoyoufeelyourgroupdidreallywell?Choosethreethingsandprovidesome detailsaroundwhyyouchosethese. OurgroupdidreallywellinaskingguidingquestionsinregardstoGBV.Wewereableto guidethegroupfromtopicswithinGBVtothecasestoryprovided. WecreatedasafeenvironmentforpeopletospeakfreelyonthetopicofGBV.Those involvedinourfacilitationsharedprettydeepinsightsintothetopic Positivegroupdynamics.Weallworkedtogethertotryanddefinetheterminology surroundingGBVtothebestofourabilities. B.Whatwouldyouchangeifyouweretofacilitatethissessionagain?Choosethree thingsandprovidesomedetailsofwhatyouwoulddodifferently. Wewouldintroducethethreeterms(Power,Violence,andConsent)inabettercontext, ratherthanjustthrowingthemoutasindependentandunrelatedtermsforbrainstorming. Inthatcase,participantswillhaveabetterunderstandingofthetopicandtheentire processwouldbemorecohesive. Duringthebrainstormingsession,insteadoftwopeoplewritingdownideas(tryingto followeveryonesthoughts),wewouldassignonepersonforwriting,anotherperson couldrephraseandfurtherarticulatetheideas. Morecleardefinitionaboutthetermsinformedconsentandvoluntaryconsent. Assignonefacilitatortoeachofthesmallgroup,jointheirdiscussions,listentotheir thoughtsclosely,andfurtherleadtheirconversations. C.Atwhatpointsinyoursessiondidyoufeelthatparticipantsweremostengagedand why? Participantsweremostengagedduringthecasestorydiscussions.Havingareal exampleandstorytofocusonanddiscussquestionsaboutreallyhelpedengageall participantsandprovideabetterunderstandingofthethreeconcepts(power,violence andconsent).Bringingbothgroupstogethertopresenttheirinterpretationsalsohelped tofosterproductivediscussionsaboutthetermsandconceptsofthesession.

D.Howwelldidyoursessionaddressissuesofpower,privilegeandmarginalization? Howcouldyoureworkthesessiontomoreeffectivelyengagewithpowerissues? Inherentlythecontent(genderbasedviolence)addressesaserioustopicofpower, privilegeandmarginalization.Itwasreallyimportantnottotrivializethatissueand maintainacalmrespectfulenvironmentinwhichtohavethediscussion.

Thereismorethatwecouldhavedonetoacknowledgethefactthatsomepeoplemay havehadpersonalexperiencewiththeseissues,andfounditemotionallydifficultto participate.Perhapswecouldhaveaddressedthatpossibilityinourintroductiontothe session,andmadeandgivenanoptoutopportunitytoanyonethatfoundthattheywere tooemotionallyattachedtoparticipate.

E.Howwouldyoudescribeyourteamworkinpreparingandfacilitatingthisexercise? Asateam,wecametoconsensusreallyquickaboutthetermsandsensitiveaspectof thetopic.Wedidnthavethestrugglebutprobablyalsoledustolessopendiscussion duringthefacilitation. Withlimitedtime,weeachvoluntarilytookresponsibilityfordifferentsectionswithoutany difficultiestodividetasks.Wewereengaged,motivated,andcooperativeasateam.

F.Whatisthemostimportantfeedbackthatyoureceivedthatyouwilltakewithyouand apply? Themostimportantfeedbackwereceivedwasthatwereallyneededtogaugetheroom forindividualsthatmayhavebeenavictimofGBV.Thisinsightwasahugelearning curveforusespeciallywhenwelearnedtherewasapersoninourgroupthathad experiencedGBV.Inthefuture,whendealingwithheavytopics,wewillgiveabriefon theseverityofthetopic,givesomestaticsandmakeawarethattherecouldpossiblybe individualsthathaveencounteredthesesortofsituations.Wecouldalsogiveindividuals theopportunitytooptoutofthefacilitationortaketimetogiveinsight.
