Introduction During respiration, stored energy in the plant is used up to release carbon dioxide, water and energy. This process of using up energy is the source of production of heat energy of the plant. Objectives The objective is to determine how much heat a germinating seed will produce in the process of respiration. Hypothesis Germinating seeds will produce more heat than those of dry seeds due to germinating seeds performing respiration. Methodology Materials: 100 germinating seeds 100 dry seeds 10% Formalin solution Thermoflasks Thermometers Corks with bores References

Procedure: Place 100 germinating seeds into one of the thermoflasks and 100 dry seeds into the other. Insert the thermometer into the bore of the cork stopper and place the cork stopper into the mouth of the thermoflask. Do this to both of the thermoflasks. Results After carefully observing the thermometer for changes in temperature, we have seen that the temperature of the thermometer in the germinating seeds increased while the thermometer in the dry seeds was constant. Discussion

Heat is produced during the plants respiration process, because of the usage of energy. The increase of temperature of the thermometer in the germinating seeds only proves that the production of heat is only possible if the plant is going through the respiration process.
