What is the proper set point of the brake?


60% ~ 80% of the lines M.B.L

How often is this test required?


Every 12 months or after any modification or repair of the winch

Who is doing the job?


Ships senior officer designated by Master or Chief Engineer or repair superintendent familiar with test procedure.

What do we need ?
A hydraulic Jack with pressure gauge indicator A foundation A special bracket (short type) or a lever consisting usually of 2 pieces of bar.

Formula :

the pressure which should be exceeded for the drum to start turning

B = Brake capacity in Tons a = Brake Drum radius in cm. b = Distance between supporting point and axe of
the drum in cm.

d = Diameter of piston of hydraulic jack in cm

At the first sight of movement:

Pressure < than designed, the brake should be tightened or repaired and repeat the test Pressure = than designed, remove the test gear. Its O.K If slippage does not occur, the brake setting should be adjusted so the brake can render the design load.
