ROMANS

Questions answered by Sarah Court

WHO WERE THE ROMANS?

Originally the Romans were people living in the city of Rome, but as they became more powerful they took over cities and land of other people. In the end they managed to take over the whole of the Mediterranean and beyond. And it was known as the Roman Empire! At that point (around 2000 years ago) all citizens of the Empire were called Romans.

HOW MANY THINGS DID THEY INVENT?

The most important thing that the Romans invented was concrete, which may not seem very exciting, but it has allowed us to build bigger and better buildings all around the world, which means living in better conditions and experiencing more interesting places. Many things had already been invented by other people but the Romans took the ideas and improved them a lot. For example: central heating, straight roads and sewer systems. They made life much easier!

HOW HAVE THESE INVENTIONS INFLEUENCED THE MEDITERRANEAN?

We still use all the Roman inventions and improvements today across the whole Mediterranean, so they have improved life for generations for people. Today people use the same type of stone for building their houses, the same stone for paving their streets, they have the same type o boats when they go fishing for the same types of fish and they eat many of the same foods.

DID THE ROMANS DO SOMETHING THAT EFFECTED THE MEDITERRANEAN?

The Romans ruled over the whole Mediterranean and they organized the legal system and forms of government that still affect our lives today, 2000 years later! They also used Latin alphabet for all their work and although they didnt invent it, they took it with them to all the places they conquered and made sure that everyone used it. It is because of the Romans that we all read and write with the same letters across the whole Mediterranean and beyond!

WHAT WERE THE NAMES OF THE LARGEST TOWNS THAT THE ROMANS BUILT?
More than a million people lived in Rome when it was the capital of the Roman Empire and it was the biggest city in the entire ancient world. The other two largest cities in the Roman world were Alexandria (Egypt) and Antioch (Turkey).
