Significance of the Ending

The last words said in the movie are Forget the Alamo. Pilar says this to Sam right after they figured out they were half Brother and sister. At first, it seems awkward that they say forget the past and still want to be together. Sam tells Pilar that even if they had met for the first time today, he would still want to be with her. The final scence takes place at the drive-in they got caught at earlier in their lives, which is along the Texas-Mexico border. This means that the two of them deciding to stay together is a way for everyone to forget about all past events and start from scratch. The scene is telling us to look carefully at history and decide what you want to do with it, let it sit in your head and potentially ruin your life, or move on and forget about it to a certain extent.

Significance of the Ending

A lot of borders are crossed throughout the movie are crossed both literally and figuratively. Sam and Pilar cross a border of incest, sharing the same dad, they are willing to forget about that and care about being happy together more. Pilars mother crosses the border of accepting that she is Hispanic even though she lives in America and helps people crossing the border out.
