Obesity

What is it ?
Obesity is a type of disease when a person has too much body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is at least 20% above average weight. Morbid obesity is when a person is 50% -100% over normal weight or more than 100 pounds over normal weight

What causes it?


Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than they burn. For many people, this comes down to eating too much and exercising too little.

Some facts....
People who are obese are 2 to 3 times more likely to die early. Obesity is ranked second in preventable causes of death. Tobacco is first. Recent studies have shown that obesity can cause you to lose sleep. Airlines spent $275 million on 350 million additional gallons of fuel for the additional weight of their passengers. (2000)

1 in 6 people are obese Between 1980 and 2000, obesity rates doubled among adults About 60 million adults, or 30% of the adult population, are now obese. 30,000 people die of obesity every year. Global obesity has doubled over the past 40 years.
