City hall moved out west

In 1912, just nine years after this river valley was transformed from prairie land to frontier town, the impressive city hall was built at the corner of 6th and Frisco. Some people wondered about building it so far west, but it didnt take long for the city to grow up around it. The police station was in the northeast corner of the building. Harold Hyman had good memories of antics of the police force in the 50s. Our son Buzzy was raised in our gas station right there behind the old city hall. When he was four or five years old, we wouldnt let him cross a street by himself. Harry Sullivan was the meter man then, and wed let Buzzy go with him. Harry had a sack, and hed let Buzzy help him dump those meters. One day Buzzy was riding his tricycle there on the station drive, and he left it right in the doorway. Well, Harry came by and saw it there, so he wrote Buzzy a parking ticket. Buzzy was gone over to Penneys, and when Chief Hanks saw him, he told him to come over and get a quarter from me and pay his fine! Buzzy was pretty worried about it, Ill tell you! Mary Lou Cabaniss Scales remembered going to the city hall for polio vaccinations. They took groups of us from grade school. We lined up to get our two little sugar cubes with the polio vaccine on it. School groups also took field trips to the city hall. I remember going to the city hall on a field trip from school. We toured the jail, and a prisoner grabbed a kid through the bars. The policemen took care of that guy through the bars with their night sticks. It was pretty impressive, said Carla Smith Moore. Kathy Allison and Barbara Woods Preston remembered going to the library which was located in the city hall. Allison recalled, I loved going to the library there. The steps to that old building were so awe inspiring. Youd go upstairs, down the hall, and left into the library. Mrs. Murphy was the librarian. She got on to me once because I was in the wrong section. Preston said, When you went in, you better have your library card, and you better be quiet! That librarian would give you stern looks, let me tell you. And I remember the stuffed armadillo they had too! The city moved its official operations to the new city hall on Gary Blvd.,in the fall of 1969, and the old building was destroyed.

I remember . . .

Wed go to Simons, and theyd say, Now honey, let me show you something right over here. Granddad Walton and all those wheelin and dealin guys would be playing cards and having a grand time. Cheri Lou McGee Gastineau I did not have good memories of Dr. Jacksons office! It was upstairs over Simons Department Store. Dr. Jackson did a good job and all, but going to the dentist every time was not my favorite thing to do! Kenny Stringer
