Postmodernapproachestoorganisationaldevelopment Apostmodernperspectiveisonewhichrecognisesthatthereisalwaysmorethan onewayoflookingatorexplainingthings.Thisunderstandingallowsus,whenwe runintoproblems,toswitchthefocusofourenergyfromhuntingdownthetruth tocreatingusefulaccountsthatallowtheorganisationandthepeopleinvolvedto moveon. Fundamentaltoapostmodernperspectiveisanunderstandingofthedifference betweenthestorylivedandthestorytold.

Thestorylivedisourexperienceandthestorytoldwhatwesayaboutit.Morethan oneaccountcanbecreatedofwhathasbeenorisbeingexperienced.Yetweoften getstuckwithoneaccountwhichbecomesestablishedasthetruth.

Postmoderninterventionsworktofind,amplify,andbringintothediscussion,all relevantvoices.Essentiallytheychallengetheideathatanyonepersonhasa monopolyonwhatreallyis. Ananalogysomepeoplefindhelpfulisthatoftherelationshipbetweenandmap andtheterrain.Manydifferentmapscanbedrawnofthesameterrainallcontaining valuableinformation;yetthebestisonlyeverarepresentation,createdfroma particularpointofview.Howevermuchricherourunderstanding,andhowmuch greaterourabilitytomove,whenwehaveaccesstoallthemaps. Postmoderninterventionsworktobringallthemapsintotheorganisational process,soenhancingcreativity,possibility,andoptionsformovingforward.

Overthenextfewissueswewillbelookingatafeworganisationaldevelopment methodologiesbasedonpostmodernistprinciplestoseehowtheycanbeusedin organisations,namely:appreciativeinquiry,systemicquestioning,identificationof strangeloopsandparadox,separatingdomainsincommunicationandmeaning, futuresearch,andstrategicplanning.
