The Question
Is there an association between average number of hours of sleep per night and the same persons grade point average (GPA)?

Obtaining The Sample

We decided we wanted a sample size of 30 people. Each group member gathered 10 samples.

We did a random sample.

We numbered the tables and the chairs at said tables in the schools cafeteria. Then we generated a random number for a table and a chair using a calculator. Then during lunch we gave the person sitting at the corresponding table and chair a questionnaire to fill out asking for the their GPA and the average number of hours they sleep per night.

Table and Graph

First Quantitative Variable

Mean: 6.633 hours Standard Deviation: 1.2313 hours Range: 6 hours Mode: 6 and 7 hours Five-Number Summary:

Minimum= 3 hours
First Quartile= 6 hours Median= 6.75 hours

Outliers: 3 and 9 hours

Third Quartile= 7 hours

Maximum= 9 hours

Histogram and Boxplot

Variable 1

Second Quantitative Variable

Mean: 3.6533 GPA Standard Deviation: 0.28129 GPA Range: 1.0 GPA Minimum= 3.0 GPA First Quartile= 3.5 GPA Median= 3.7 GPA

Mode: 3.9 GPA

Outliers: 3.0 GPA

Third Quartile= 3.9 GPA

Maximum= 4.0 GPA

Five-Number Summary:

Histogram and Boxplot

Scatter Plot with Line of Regression

Linear Correlation coefficient: r= 0.27245847942467 Regression line equation: y=3.2404473085671+ 0.062244124336614x

Results
There is a lack of correlation between the two variables since the value for r is 0.27245847942467 and the critical value for a sample size of thirty is 0.361. The value for r is less then the critical value and it is closer to zero then one. Also the points on the scatter plot do not closely follow the line of regression. There is no association between average number of hours of sleep per night to their grade point average.
