MIDTERM EXAMINATION Subject : CE 57- WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE

Name of Faculty : Engr. Florencio B. Maghinay, BSCE Date : Jan. 15, 2013 Time : 4:00 5:30 PM ________________________________________________________

1. A polymeric coagulant, undiluted has an absolute viscosity of 0.48 kg/(m.-sec) or (0.01 lb.sec/ft) and a specific gravity of 1.15. This fluid is to be pumped at a rate of 3.78 Liters/minute (1gal/minute) through 15.25 m (50 ft.) of -inch-diameter schedule 40 pipe. What is the head loss resulting from viscosity or resulting from friction. Select which head loss do you want to compute (due to viscosity or due to friction). (25%)
a. b. c.

=0.48 Kg.(m-sec)
Internal diameter() of -inch-diameter pipe schedule 40=15.80mm S.G. of fluid (undiluted polymeric coagulant)=1.15

2. Water flows from one basin to another with a water surface at 100-meter elevation to another with water surface at 99-meter. Flow is through 20-feet long, class 2, 8-inch diameter ductile iron pipe with 2 gate valves, 1 check valve and 1 square edged orifice and submerged at the exit. What is the flow? Given K(gate valve)=0.10; K(check valve)=0.65; K(orifice)=0.5; f=0.014; Class 2, 8-inch iron pipe has an inner diameter of 8.39 inches (213.1mm). (25%) 3. What is the flow rate in a 48-inch corrugated metal pipe in a slope of 0.003 if the depth of flow is 19 inches. n=0.022 (25%). 4. Determine the average velocity in a trunk sewer made of concrete (n=0.015), having 1,500mm diameter laid on a slope of 1%. The discharge through the pipe is 4,000 liters per second. The surface of the water subtends an angle of 3.5radians. Determine the average velocity (25%).
