5 Scatter plots and Least Squares Lines

Learning Objective: to create a scatter plot and use the calculator to find the line of best fit and make predictions.

Warm-up (IN)
1. Plot each point in the same coordinate plane: A(1,400) B(3,300) C(6,150) D(8,50)
2. If a line were drawn to connect the four points, would its slope be positive or negative? negative 3. Write the equation of the line through the points: (-2,5) and (1,-1) y=-2x+1

Notes Positive Correlation as Negative Correlation as x increases, y increases x increases, y decreases

No Correlation no linear pattern Least Squares Line Line of best fit! EX 1 The table gives the average speed of an airplane during the first 10 minutes of a flight, with x in minutes and y in miles per hour.

a. Draw a scatter plot and find the equation of the line of best fit.

b. Use your equation to predict the speed of a plane after 22 minutes. c. Use your calculator to find the regression line, then check your prediction.

Correlation Coefficient r

Indicates how closely the data points cluster around the least squares line

Out How can least squares lines be useful?
