Copyright - the right to copy The person who creates or invents it, is the only person who has the copyright. Copyright is created when the idea is justifiable to the person and can be proved to be the persons own original idea. This could be writing it down or recording or having some form of solid evidence of its date of creation. Copyright is profitable to the song writer. This was especially the case before the recording idustry was here and music made money via music publishing. The music publishers would publish and sell sheet music of popular songs. Song writers would be employed by publishers. The song writer would then assign the copyright to the publishers, in return for a royalty (percentage) on every copy sold. When the recording industry came into play, A&R from the companies would go into stores where sheet music was sold and look for songs for their artists to record. The publishers then began to assign the copyright to the record labels so that they could manufacture records. In the early days of record labels, the song writer and recording artist were always different people. UK LAW (1988 COPYRIGHTS AND PATENTS ACT) It is a legal requirement for record labels to pay 8.5% of their dealer price to the original copyright owner.
