Component Comprehension (50 points)

Sophisticated (40-50 points) The paper demonstrates a superior understanding of the relevant law (for example, causes of action, case outcomes, judicial analysis, and attorney strategies and options).

Competent (25-40 points) The student exhibits confusion about the relevant law, but does draw adequately from cases and/or discussion in class.

Component Organization (15 points)

Sophisticated (12-15 points) The information is appropriately organized for application and/or further examination.

Competent (8-12 points) Organization could be improved, but some structure is evident.

Component Application and Analysis (35 points)

Sophisticated (30-35 points) The work confidently applies and analyses the material, for example by: (1) communicating insightful contrasts and comparisons; (2) identifying interesting patterns across cases; (3) using material (e.g. a cause of action) from one case to re-examine options in another case.

Competent (20-30 points) The student has mixed success in working with one or more contrasts, comparisons, or patterns, or in re-applying an idea to a new context. The analysis may be there, but not entirely convincing or thought-out.

Needs Work (0-25 points) The work demonstrates a poor understanding of the relevant law, or contains too little detail to make assessment of comprehension possible. Needs Work (0-8 points) The work demonstrates a limited ability to organize the information for further application. Needs Work (0-20 points) The work demonstrates an extremely limited ability to work creatively with the material.
