Objective and Scope

The main notable objective of this project is the development of a sustainable and advanced wing for modern flight. This is brought about by refining the existing wing to a superior degree with the help of smart materials and processes. The use of electricity instead of hydraulics for the functioning of the flaps will help in better utilisation of known resources coupled with the improvement in the performance of the aircraft. This innovative idea can be utilized in various components of the airplane and can also revolutionize the design and fabrication of the same in remarkable ways.

Description of research work

The concept of smart wing being relatively new and untouched will require a thorough and extensive research and analysis. It will foremost include the modelling of an appropriate virtual design of a wing structure through software like CATIA. This will be followed by analysis in various fields, e.g. aerodynamic analysis, Structural analysis and Computational fluid dynamic analysis. All of the above mentioned analysis can be carried out by using suitable software like Nastran, Hypermesh and Ansys. Apart from this, other research work will include the development of further ideas about usage of various materials which will make this concept feasible i.e. smart material like Nicrome springs and other composites. Lastly if time permits, a physical model may be developed for enhanced understanding and practicality of the concept.
