If I were the government, there are three environmental issues that I would like to mitigate their impacts in the

next five years. First of all, I would like to start focusing on light pollution that many people in Singapore are unaware of. This pollution, as the name suggests, is caused by poorly designed light fixtures found in streetlamps, billboards and approach lights at airport runways. Besides energy wasted from excessive and improper use of lighting, this exposure has affected migratory bird population in Singapore and contributed to the decreased response time and sensitivity of the ageing eyes of the elderly, not to mention the consequences on astronomy. Thus I would like to embark a new project to engage the community in choosing the right LED light bulb and controlling the use of lighting in the house so that the problems caused can be reduced. Moreover, I believe that it is essential to consider of switching our source of energy to renewable energy due to the other finite sources of energy which are depleting. While Singapore has limitation in hydro and geothermal resources as well as scarcity of land, Singapores strength in Research and Development sector can be utilised to make the use of biofuel, solar and fuel cells viable. This will help to prepare Singapore to be vigilant and resilient in the future as we would be able to be independent in providing energy for the upcoming generations. Another issue that I am concern about is waste management, especially the solid waste. As Singapore is facing the problem of land scarcity, I feel that it is important to monitor and control the waste that we produce every day. 200000 tonnes of solid waste and ash are sent every year to the landfill and the issue is that we are only left with one landfill in Singapore. If we do not immediately come up with solution, there will be no more landfill to dump our waste in 2052. While incineration could help to reduce the volume of waste by 90%, the increasing quantity of waster is the main problem. Therefore, this is one of the biggest concern that I have towards environmental issues in Singapore.
