Blending Onsets and Rimes

Materials: none Procedures:


Stretch arms in front with hands cupped. Segment a word at the onset/rime level. /c/ (onset) /at/ (rime) Gesture to hold the onset in one hand and the rime in the other. Join hands together as the word is blended. /cat/ Say segmented words at the onset-rime level. Have students repeat the onset and rime, then blend, sliding cupped hands together. Variation: Blend onsets and rimes as a cheer.

Large felt board, felt rectangles and squares (variety of colors), individual felt boards, small felt rectangles and squares

Display one square and one rectangle on the large felt board. Choose a rime (the vowel and everything after it) and several onsets to manipulate. rime: /at/ onsets: /ch/, /fl/, /b/, /m/ Touch the square and say the onset. /ch/ Touch the rectangle and say the rime. /at/ Blend the onset and rime by sliding your hand underneath. /chat/ Have students identify the rime.
