Recorder Lesson - 5th Grade - 1/16/13 PREP: (Finish the activity from the last class.

) Have the students who did not have a turn last week to be the leader to come up with a rhythm. After the students have had their turns, clap one more rhythm. Have the students use the rhythm cards to figure out this rhythm. Once the students have figured out the rhythm, have all of the students play that rhythm on the recorder (one note at a time-reviewing the notes that they know). Tell the students to keep their rhythm cards in that order for the next activity. SEQUENCE: Have the students get a pencil for the next activity and hand out the strips of paper. Explain the directions for the following activity. Have the students copy the rhythm from the rhythm cards (from the last activity) onto the strip of paper and have the students write their names on the back of the strip of paper. After the students have copied the rhythm onto the paper, have them write letter names (they pick the letter names from the notes they know) on the line under each beat. Once students are finished with writing the rhythm and letter names down on the paper have them silently finger the notes on the recorder. CLOSING: Have each student share what he or she composed on the recorder. Once each student has played on the recorder have he or she clean and put away the recorder.
