Reflection task 4

The importance of being an effective teacher depends on how the teacher can foster students learning and to do her work in same time. In my teaching experience, I had the opportunity to shadow my mentor anywhere she go, and write what she was doing. One of my mentors every day role is to attend the assembly every morning, and monitor the students. After that, she go to her ICT laboratory and check is everything are working and make sure the classroom is clean and tidy. I asked her once, why are you checking everyday if the classroom is clean? The social worker are doing the work and they the once who is responsible. Ashe looked at me with a smile and said: it is one of the teacher responsibilities to make sure that the classroom is a place to teach and study, and the most important thing to me is students relaxation. I remembered what I learn in collage about the teacher roles toward the students, and making the students comfortable is one of it. Considering this fact, the students will stimulate learning better and having the fact that teacher is cleaning the classroom, students also will make sure that after they leave the session they will clean their mess too. My mentor showed a positive attitude and professionalism toward her work (Kyriacou, 2007). This skills is one of essential skills that teacher should have, and that what I learned in the book of Essential teaching skills. My mentor always makes sure that she takes the attendance, because at her ICT lesson the students are her responsibility. In addition, she has to make sure that all of them are in her class learning. If she notices one girl is missing, she directly contacts with the administrator and asked if she is really absent or skipped the lesson. Another part of my mentor work is to plan for her next lesson or unite. She always meets with her colleague, and they start to plan and organize what they should

teach. Planning for the lesson is an essential skill each teacher should have. From planning the teacher will know what students are lacking in, and from that she could do some extra work for them and plan for a day to repeat a lesson. Planning helps teachers to think about the kind of teaching they want to happen in their lesson (Kyriacou, 2007), and it also helps in reducing of the amount of your thinking and let your lesson go smoothly. Moreover, planning helps teacher to manage her time. My mentor also has roles outside the classroom. She has to mark students worksheets and homework, and add the grade in her system. She also has to organize and print the academic record (certificate) for other teachers, and she also decorates the hallway with posters. I learnt from shadowing my teacher that it is not only for teacher to teach students. In fact she has lots of work and roles in school, and that is way now I more excited to learned work to become a better teacher in future.
