Debates for Human Service Provision Tutorials In the first half of study period 2, the Human Service Provision

Tutorials consist of debates whereby the class is divided into two groups. This will be your tutorial group for the first half of the study period. Each week there will be a debate topic related to that weeks course content. Students in each group will allocate various roles. Each week in each group there needs to be 3 people who will debate the topic, one person who will observe the groups interaction- how well did they work together and so on with the rest of the group working with the speakers to prepare their arguments. These roles will change each week so that everyone in the group will have the opportunity to debate and observe. Those who do not have a formal role need to assist the speakers in developing their responses to the topic. Each group will alternate weekly in representing the affirmative (that is they agree with the statement) and the negative (that is they will speak against the statement. For example the topic for the first weeks debate is Australia is a racist country. The affirmative group will try and show that this statement is true whilst the other group will argue that it is untrue. The tutor will be the adjudicator! Week 1: Australia is a racist country Week 2: Positive discrimination discriminates against those who do not experience any other form of discrimination or Social workers are do-gooders who interfere in peoples lives . Week 3: Providing people with a range of human services makes them dependent. Week 4: There is an old adage, charity begins at home and there are plenty of people in Australia suffering so we should not be giving money to overseas countries.
