Lesson Plan

Unit/Topic:

Our Place in the Solar System

Date:

16/5/13 (3 x lessons) 8.30-10.30 double lesson 12.15-1.15 single lesson

Key Learning Area:

Earth and Space Science

Year Level:

Year 5

Overall Lesson Sequence Outcomes:

Refer lesson plan dated 2/5/13 for cross curricular outcomes.

LESSON OUTCOME:
(Key Knowledge and Skills students should achieve in the lesson taken from relevant curriculum documents.)

(Procedural Knowledge able to do) Identify the different planets of the solar system. Research and record data about the composition of the planets, and a comparison of how long the planets take to orbit the sun. Transfer and convert data from research to a 3D labelled model which also illustrates understanding of the relative size of and distance between Earth, the other planets and the Sun Communicate ideas and explanations in a variety of ways (Declarative Knowledge knows or understands) Understand there are eight planets in our solar system. Understand that planets vary in composition, size, and distance from one another and the sun

LESSON STRUCTURE: Time

8.30am10.30am

Introduction (Set):
Give overview of the three Science lessons planned for today. Go through Assignment 1 criteria sheet for Above, Expected and Below and the interactive whiteboard. Finish of research and posters for Assignment 1.

Teaching Approaches

Discuss requirements for Assessments 2 and 3 and hand out copies of criteria sheets for assessments. Go thru requirements for Above, Expected and Below for Assessment 2. Those students who are ready commence research for assignment 2. 12.15 1.15pm Assessment 2 - 3D model overview Research the composition of the sun and the planets and a comparison of how long the planets take to orbit the sun. Apply your knowledge to identify the 8 planets, their relative size and distance from the Sun, Earth and each other. Create a model clearly set out and labelled with relevant information. Effective use of class time. Ascertain who needs to finish Religion, Maths and outstanding Assignment 1 (poster) tasks and complete on the verandah. The remaining students rearrange the desks so that students needing to continue with their research on the compositions of the planets and a comparison of how long they take to orbit the sun can do so. Analysing Functionally Conceptualising by naming

Applying appropriately and creatively

Students who have finished their research organise work stations to paint planets for their 3D models. Give instructions re production line: Collect Science books for accurate transfer of information to 3D model Label shopping bags with names Collect foam balls for planets Select paint colour Paint planets Place wet planets on plastic underneath computer desks with name labels Be careful not to drop paint on floor/peers Monitor and scaffold as needed so that students can complete their research and start their 3D model by the end of the session.

Assignment 3 Choose a planet to study and research interesting facts about: Colour Temperature Atmosphere Origins When it was discovered Surface Composition Moons Who it was named after Other interesting facts, and Why you chose this planet to research Present your findings as a written profile on an A3 poster with visuals

Time 1.13 pm

Conclusion: Recap on the requirements for Assignment 2 and 3 All wet planet balls to be placed on plastic and labelled. Desks and work areas cleaned and desks rearranged as usual.
