First Meeting of Constituent Assembly

Drafting Committee

Elected on 29 August 1947 by the Constituent Assembly Dr. B.R.Ambedkar- Chairman Drafting Committee- Prepared the Constitution Circulated -21 February 1948 Basis of Discussion-inside and outside the Constituent Assembly

Constituent Assembly

Elected by Indirect Elections by members of Provincial Legislative Assemblies Scheme formulated by Cabinet Mission

Features of the Scheme

Each Province and Indian State allotted seats in proportion to their respective population One seat-One Million (approx) Provinces to elect 292 members and Princely States- a minimum of 93 seats

Seats in each Province were distributed among three major categories: Muslims, Sikhs and General- in proportion to their population Proportional Representation For Indian States- the method to be decided by the Ruler

Separate Constituent Assembly

For Pakistan: Separate Constituent Assembly Set up on 3 June 1947 Members of Bengal, Punjab, Balucuhistan, and Sylhet district of Assam ceased to be members of Constituent assembly for India West Bengal and East Punjab had fresh elections

Enacting the Constitution

31 October 1947: Total Membership of CA-299 All decisions taken by voice vote Decisions Can be said to unanimous
