    Meiosis is the process of cell division that produces gametes or sex cells with half the normal number of chromosomes. It occurs in two divisions to reduce the chromosome number from a diploid parent cell to haploid gametes. Errors during meiosis can result in gametes with an abnormal chromosome number, which if fertilized can cause conditions like Down syndrome where the offspring has an extra copy of chromosome 21.

    Why do we need meiosis?


    Meiosis is necessary to halve the number of chromosomes going into the sex cells Why halve the chromosomes in gametes? At fertilisation the male and female sex cells will provide of the chromosomes each so the offspring has genes from both parents

    Should the gamete with the chromosome pair be fertilised then the offspring will not be normal.

    In humans this often occurs with the 21st pair producing a child with Downs Syndrome
