PRONOUN-ANTECEDENT AGREEMENT Examples: Indian literature is noted for its piety, a deeply religious spirit.

The Indians believe in reincarnation and consequently, they believe in kindness to other people and animals. 1. Pronouns agree with their antecedents in gender, number & persons. Examples: Shakuntala and her son made the gods pity them. Kristine and I gave our analysis of Ramayana. 2. When two or more antecedents are connected by and, a pronoun referring to them is plural. EXAMPLES: Each of the poets reflects his idea of carpe diem. Either of these women may contribute her short story. 3. When the antecedent is each, either, or neither followed by a plural modifier, a singular noun is preferred. EXAMPLES: Each has his or her story preference. Everybody has his or her own interpretation of the poem. 4. When the antecedent is everybody, each, either, everyone, neither, nobody, or a person, a singular pronoun is used. When the antecedent is the impersonal one, the third person pronoun is used unless it's formal. EXAMPLE: One sometimes finds oneself a source of strength. 5. When the antecedent is a collective noun, the pronoun may either be singular or plural depending on whether the group is thought of as unit or several persons EXAMPLES: The committee started its research work. The committee are presenting their contributions now. 6. The relative pronoun who or whom is used when the antecedent is a person; which is used when the antecedent is a thing; that is used when the antecedent is a person, animal or thing. EXAMPLES : Gandhi who was the political Father of modern India was Tagore's devoted friend.
