A new concrete block revetment was installed along Felixstowe Ferry Sailing Clubs frontage on the River Deben. The works were required to deal with potential flooding as this could cause serious damage to the sensitive landscape, undermine other sea defences and, ultimately, radically change the estuary mouth of the River Deben. The previous revetment had failed due to scouring at the toe because of the very fast flowing River Deben, drawing water that had gone into the revetment through the back and subsequently, taking materials away from the toe. page 1 of 2

Case study 1.2.9 A novel system of using geobags in the toe, filled with local materials, was employed. Non-woven containment provides high permeability, but a low pore size. This meant that fine materials were kept in and under the bags, but would allow water flow through the bags as quickly as the sand and shingle material would allow.

GEOfabrics HPS7 was used to construct the bags, due to the suitable permeability and porosity figures, but also due to its high strength; as the bags could potentially be hit by sailing boats at low tides.
