168EC Higher Testbuilder
‘The BEC Higher Testbuilder provides students with the information and practice they need to pass
BEC Higher. It offers teachers and students an encouraging and accessible way to prepare for the
exam and may be used as part of a business English course or as a self-access programme for students
preparing for the exam on their own. There are four complete practice tests that reflect the content and
level of the actual examination. All the tests are of a similar standard and include the themes, topics
and vocabulary specified in the BEC Higher Syllabus. They are accompanied by an expanded answer
key and further practice and guidance pages.
Key and Explanation
‘The main purpose of the key and explanation is to promote confidence and understanding of the
demands of the exam. It gives students and teachers information about why a particular answer is
correct and, when appropriate, there are explanations as to why other options or possible answers are
incorrect
Further Practice and Guidance pages
Each part of the test is accompanied by one or more further practice and guidance pages. The aim of
these pages is to give students more information about how to tackle the particular item types in that
part of the test and to help them develop the independence and conficlence to check their own answers
to the test questions. There are also graduated exercises to enable them to improve their test technique
as well as their language skills.
How to use the BEC Higher Testbuilder
1 Follow the instructions given at the end of each part of the test.
If there are Further Practice pages relating to that part you can:
a complete one part of a paper, perhaps under exam conditions, and then either do the Further
Practice pages relating to that part, check the answers to the Further Practice questions and
then review the test questions, taking into consideration what you have practised. Then you
check the answers to the test questions and go through the explanations.
OR
b check the answers to the test questions you have just done and go through the explanations if
there are no Further Practice activities.
2 Vary the order. You may wish to do some of the Further Practice and Guidance pages before
answering the part of the test they relate to.
Note to teachers
Asan alternative to the above, you may wish to do the Further Practice and Guidance pages as
discussion or pairwork, or ask students to prepare them before class.
